All it takes is one.
If a threat insect enters Australia, it could cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to agribusiness industries, and close market access to some trade partners forever. The Khapra beetle could cost Aussie agriculture $15 billion over 20 years.
Dex Vision is a Western Australian start-up using the machine learning field of computer vision to help detect and report harmful pest insects.
We have built computer vision models that allow anyone, from farmers to customs officers, to identify bugs using their cell phone camera. On February 2020 we received funding from the Council of Grain Grower Organisations (COGGO) to expand our research and development. Dex developed the 1st prize-winning product at the Ministry of Data AgHack.
The beta version of the Dex Vision product has some highly encouraging results. The computer vision models target more than 50 significant pest insect groups, including most of those in Australia's list of top 40 pests and priorities from the WA government’s declared pest lists.
